Mission in the Former Soviet Union
A conference on evangelical mission in the FSU took place at the International Baptist Theological Seminary from the 2nd to the 6th of February 2003 looking at the past and present mission done by evangelicals. This collection of articles summarizes the different presentations and gives an opportunity beyond the conference to engage into a discussion on the topic.
The main speaker challenging conference participants was Walter W. Sawatsky, a well known expert familiar to many not least by his book „Soviet Evangelicals after World War II“, a standard book which offers many insights about Soviet evangelicalism. Walter Sawatsky is professor of Church History and Mission and Director of the Mission Studies Center at the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart (Indiana/USA). He is also editor of „Mission Focus“ and co-editor of „Religion in Eastern Europe“:
The conference, however, was more than abstract discussion of experts on the topic. It brought together academicians as well as practitioners in evangelical missions from East and West for study and exchange. The conference was held at the International Baptist Theological Seminary and organised by Peter F. Penner, Director of the Institute for Mission and Evangelism.
